Nestled within the Yucatan peninsular of Mexico, you will find Cancun. Commonly thought of as a ‘spring breakers’ party destination, it offers much more than this. If blue waters, blue skies and green guacamole are your thing, then this could be the place for you.
Having recently spent 10 days in this location staying at the Iberostar Cancun, I thought I would offer some insight as to what you can expect to find here. The hotel itself offers a sumptuous array of activities, from a full sized football pitch, to table tennis, to rifle shooting. There is even a private beach out the back of the hotel which had security on it throughout the day keeping those pesky beach sellers away.
Throughout our stay in Cancun we went on a number of trips including:
- A guided tour of Tulum
- A trip to the city of Valladolid
- A visit to local mayan tribe
- A swimming session in a Cenote
- A trip a Chichen Itza (wonder of the world)
Out of the 5 trips, I would highly recommend a swim in a Cenote and the trip to Chichen Itza. The Cenote offers a truly unique experience, allowing you to immerse yourself in the jungle, while the temple Chichen Itza is a wonder of the world and a colossal spectacle. I would recommend paying the extra fee for a tour guide as they have so much knowledge of the sites. The temple is pretty much the main reason I wanted to visit Mexico.
Cancun does have its downsides, for instance, jump on a bus and head into the city centre where the atmosphere is not so relaxed. The busses are very different. They have no windows or doors, great for a breeze, not great for safety. Persistent stall sellers approach you the moment you step off the bus, offering you discount and deals on all their wares and strange looking ‘lotions and potions’. I mean, if you always wanted a lime green hoodie or Mexican flag themed water bottle for £3.50 then you may just find your oasis here. But it wasn’t’ for me.
No trip to Cancun would be complete without a trip to see the famous Coco-Bongos show, which we decided to do on our last night, and it was definitely the perfect way to end the holiday.
“Party the night away at Punta Cana’s legendary Coco Bongo nightclub, where a Vegas-style extravaganza awaits. With unlimited drinks and a four-hour show featuring dancers, performers, acrobats and singers you’ll be swept away by Coco Bongo’s dazzling night-time atmosphere.”
We booked it as a tour, which meant we were picked up and dropped off by our own private taxi. I’d recommend doing this, as there are a number of shady looking vehicles claiming to be night busses when you leave the venue.
10/10 would recommend Cancun for everyone and anyone! It’s a beautiful place with so much to see and do.
